Comme son nom l'indique, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne s'est installé sur les rives de la rivière Dronne, un sous-affluent de la Dordogne.  Le site est remarquable. Le village est disposé en amphithéâtre autour d’une boucle de cette rivière, il est également accroché à une falaise crayeuse. Ce dernier élément est à l’origine du nom d’Aubeterre. Aubeterre = Alba Terra qui signifie « terre blanche » en lien avec ce roc à pic de craie blanche domine le bourg.

PuilboreauLa première mention du nom date de 1199 et il s’agit de Podioliborelli. On retouve ce nom dans un texte qui raconte la réception d'une délégation rochelaise par Aliénor d'Aquitaine. Le toponyme a ensuite évolué en Polyboreau, Puy-le-Boreau, Pilboreau et enfin Puilboreau.
