The CX-80 is Mazda’s latest flagship. Larger than the closely related CX-60, the new model has seven seats and offers a choice of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and diesel power. I’ve been towing with the 3.3-litre diesel, the Mazda CX-80 3.3D AWD Exclusive Line. Is the CX-80 better, as well as bigger, than Mazda’s other SUVs? Does the car justify a price of over £50,000 and how well does it tow a caravan? As Mazda’s largest SUV, it’s no surprise that the CX-80 is a very heavy car.

There are plenty of seven-seaters to choose from, and hybrids are ten-a-penny. But if you want both space for seven and hybrid power, your options are more limited. The trouble is, the batteries and electric motor need to go somewhere, and the third-row seats are often what makes way. However, some manufacturers have found space for three rows of seats and hybrid power in their SUVs and MPVs, and these are our pick of the best.

If you needed seven seats, MPVs used to be the cars to choose. Now, though, it is the seven-seat SUV that rules this part of the market. Buyers can choose from petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric offerings, and with prices for brand new models starting from less than £20,000, there really is something to suit most budgets. What that in mind, here is our pick of the best seven-seater cars on the market right now.

Electric vehicles have been highly sought after by company car drivers since the the government slashed benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax rates for electric cars in 2020. Fleets have gone mad for them ever since, and there is no sign of that slowing down. At the time of writing, all pure pure electric cars (i.e. those that run only on electric power and create zero CO2 emissions; hybrids and plug-in hybrids are another matter) were in the 2% BIK tax band – the lowest there is.
