A new Canadian government will need to restore clarity, ambition, and coordination to Canadian foreign policy, along with the fine art of saying and doing things internationally to advance the national interest. This requires having a clear sense of what our national interest is, and the internal coordination and discipline to advance it. It’s a process of policy delivery that begins with the leadership of the prime minister in Ottawa and ends with our diplomats stationed around the globe.

Canada awakes this morning to find its southern neighbour once again wearing a bright red MAGA hat. Donald Trump is the presumptive 47th president of the United States of America and will become only the second president to be elected in non-consecutive terms. In the end, worry about what might happen given a tight, contested election and uncertain results was for naught. As things stand, Trump handily won both the Electoral College and the popular vote count.

Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly’s visit to Beijing last week was built around an understanding of China that’s at least a decade out of date. The minister and more than a few media analysts lauded the opportunity (the first by a Canadian foreign minister in almost seven years) for “dialogue” with China’s leadership. But dialogue involves a conversation, a shared approach to illuminate or resolve an issue. It’s what happens when senior officials from normal countries meet.
