Enterprise seniors Evelyn Holmes-Smith and Kameron Stiffler both capped their high school wrestling careers in style this past winter. Holmes-Smith earned her fifth state title and captured her 100th career win, becoming the first high school female wrestler in state of Alabama history to accomplish both feats. Her latest title came in the AHSAA girls Class 6A-7A 138-pound weight class to finish off a 32-1 season.

ENTERPRISE – The Enterprise Wildcats baseball team isn’t done making history. A week after setting the school record for wins in a season and advancing to the program’s first state playoff semifinal appearance, the Wildcats added another historical feat on Friday afternoon to an already historic season.

So with Thursday’s opening game of the Class 7A state semifinal series on the line in the seventh inning, he brought in ace starting pitcher Brady Richardson to finish the game.

Both Rehobeth and Kinston softball teams won a pair of games Thursday at the South Regional Tournament to advance to state tournament play next week, while Opp lost two games and had its season come to an end. Rehobeth, in Class 6A action, defeated Baldwin County 5-1 and Spanish Fort 2-1, while Kinston edged Leroy 5-4 and beat Brantley 10-1 in the Class 1A regional tournament.

ENTERPRISE – Six years ago, Jordan Harmon had a curiosity sensation about what he could do in the sport of track and field. Turns out, he was pretty good in it – so much that he is now going to college to compete in the sport. Harmon, an Enterprise High School senior who specializes in the jumping events of track and field, has signed with the University of Montevallo to continue in the sport.

TROY – With two long games and a weather delay, it turned into a long day at the ballpark that didn’t end until 11:38 p.m. for Wednesday’s Class 2A state semifinal teams Pike Liberal Arts and Reeltown at Butch Austin Field on the PLAS campus. The homestanding Pike Liberal Arts Patriots didn’t mind, though. The Patriots earned a doubleheader sweep over the Rebels to advance to next week’s AHSAA Class 2A State Championship Series in Oxford.

Opp’s showdown against Orange Beach will have to wait another day for its conclusion. The AHSAA Class 4A South Regional Tournament winners’ bracket game was suspended Wednesday by weather issues in Gulf Shores along with several Class 1A and Class 6A games. Orange Beach, a four-time defending state champion, led Opp, last year’s Class 3A state winner, 5-1 in the top of the fourth inning. The teams will resume play on Thursday morning at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

The Lakeside School Chiefs are now back-to-back AISA state champions. Capped by a walk-off solo homer by Carson Scott, the Chiefs swept a doubleheader over Patrician Academy on Wednesday afternoon at Montgomery’s Paterson Field to win the best-of-three Class A championship series. Scott’s homer, which came with one out in the bottom of the seventh on a 1-1 pitch, gave Lakeside a 5-4 second-game win. The Chiefs captured a 9-0 win in the opener.

MIDLAND CITY – Quentin Harper said he has always enjoyed running, especially around his neighborhood and in the last two years for Dale County High School’s track team. The Warriors senior will now get to run competitively on the collegiate level after signing with Wallace College’s first-year cross country program. “I have always loved running,” Harper said on Wednesday after a signing ceremony at the high school gym.

Houston Academy, Wicksburg and Pike Liberal Arts all claimed South Regional Tournament titles in Gulf Shores on Tuesday to advance to next week’s AHSAA State Championships in Oxford. Joining the three at the state tournament is Zion Chapel, which earned the second qualifying spot in Class 2A. Houston Academy won the Class 5A South Regional title with a 5-0 win over Faith Academy to finish unbeaten in three tournament games after outscoring the three foes a combined 27-0.
