Remember when impassioned protesters stormed a Capitol building and disrupted the democratic process? No, not the mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. I’m talking about the pro-union one that stormed the Wisconsin state Capitol on Feb. 21, 2011. I am reminded of Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s blunt declaration, “We are entitled to our own opinions, but not our own facts,” when I consider the campaign of misinformation, distortion, and outright lies put forward by some who oppose proposed ballot Amendment 2. The proposal would amend the Kentucky Constitution to allow lawmakers to debate meaningful alternatives to our current approach to education. Let me be clear: this proposal is not an attack on public education.

“I’ll be honest with you,” said Teamsters President Sean O’Brien in a recent podcast interview. “I’m a Democrat, but they have f—ed us over for the last 40 years.”Wearing a T-shirt with “Teamsters vs. Everybody,” he accused Democrats of selling out “working people” in favor of “Big Tech.”O’Brien’s rhetoric mirrors the feelings of Teamsters’ rank-and-file, which supports former President Trump over Vice President Harris by nearly 20 percentage points.

The digital divide – the gap between communities with and without access to high-speed internet – is a prominent issue in Pennsylvania. More than Pennsylvania households, businesses, and community institutions lack broadband. Unfortunately, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry (L&I), under Gov. Josh Shapiro’s leadership, has doubled the cost of broadband development with regulatory red tape –leaving many communities in the digital dust.

In 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court humbled public sector union officials accustomed to taking advantage of the public employees they were supposed to serve. In Janus v. AFSCME, the court overturned a decades-old precedent that once forced public employees to pay union dues as a condition of employment. After Janus, more public sector employees exercised their constitutional right to associate freely.

Another rowdy student group recently took over an Ivy League school, driven by outside agitators who neither attend nor care about the university’s success. But these students weren’t advocating for a ceasefire or divestment. Instead, they demanded a union. Despite lacking majority support, these students successfully unionized — and their actions were entirely legal.

In Connecticut, getting a job in state government comes with strings attached. As soon as you’re hired, the state sends your contact information, including your home address, to a union you’ve never joined and to union officials you’ve never met. The union also has the right to meet with you for at least 30 minutes, even one-on-one, to ensure you join and start paying dues.
