Standard recycled resin prices in Europe have maintained an upward trend during the last two months after a slow start to the new year. The modest improvement in demand comes as converters have started to replenish stocks in preparation for spring, although volume calls remain lower than would normally be expected. Higher input costs and rising prices alongside a limited availability of standard material have further supported the upward trend for standard recyalate prices.

There has been a modest improvement in demand as converters have started to replenish stocks in preparation for the spring season, although volume calls remain lower than would normally be expected.

In February, standard thermoplastics prices in Europe increased across the board following a steep rise in feedstock costs. Low density polyethylene prices increased at a much higher rate than the €52.5 per metric ton rise for the ethylene reference price because of tight supply. Linear low density PE, where supply is not quite so tight, posted gains of around €60 per tonne.

L/LDPEL/LDPE producers initially targeted triple-digit price increases at the beginning of February and LDPE prices increased at a much higher rate than the €52.5/tonne rise for the ethylene reference price with gains of up to €80/tonne. LDPE availability was particularly tight because of production cutbacks, but there was still sufficient material available. LLDPE, where supply is not quite so tight, posted gains of around €60/tonne.

LLDPE, where supply is not quite so tight, posted gains of around €60/tonne. HDPE and PP prices settled with gains just above the increases of €52.5/tonne for both ethylene and propylene prices.

Recyclers also had plenty of stock in their warehouses, meaning that implementation of price increases to improve margin at a time of low demand, was unlikely. Furthermore, recyclers faced growing competition from the falling cost of standard material.

At the start of 2025, standard thermoplastics prices in Europe saw very limited movement following stable ethylene and propylene prices. The overall demand picture remained lackluster, due to ongoing economic weakness and geopolitical uncertainties, while supply remained more than adequate, despite the production cutbacks. In January, polyethylene and polypropylene prices were mostly rolled over in line with the unchanged monomer contracts.
