When I first began in ministry in the Scottish Highland village of Brora, we regularly received visitors who in response to the infamous 1967 Jean Darnall's prophecy about 'revival fire' spreading from the Scottish Highlands to the whole of the UK, wanted to come and get a bit of the action. Our small church was growing - and they believed we were one of the signs. To be honest they were at best a nuisance - at worst a hindrance.

The last time the nuclear industry got its way in Ontario, the province’s erstwhile publicly-owned electrical utility, Ontario Hydro, spent over two decades building 20 nuclear reactors. It was a mashup of missed deadlines, cost overruns and a troubling pattern of declining nuclear performance. Even more troubling, the last generation of nuclear reactors forced Ontario Hydro to the edge of bankruptcy. It saddled the province with a mountain of nuclear debt that we are still paying off.

Euthanasia, mercy killing, assisted suicide or whatever you care to call it is a profoundly difficult, emotional and complex subject which many Christians, including yours truly, struggle with. On the one hand the case for preventing pointless suffering at the end of life seems strong. That is until you examine the consequences of a society allowing the State to kill its own citizens - even at their request. I have wrestled with, and continue to wrestle with, all the complexities of this.
