For the third year in a row, antisemitic incidents in Pennsylvania have reached a new high, according to the 2024 Audit of Antisemitic Incidents by the Anti-Defamation League. The Keystone State ranked fourth in the United States for the most antisemitic incidents in 2024, with 465 incidents reported — an 18% jump from 2023. Nationally, there were 9,354 incidents of antisemitic assault, harassment and vandalism — an 893% increase over the last 10 years — the ADL reported.

Hillel Academy of Pittsburgh has announced the resignation of Principal and Educational Director Rabbi Sam Weinberg. The announcement was made in an April 10 email from Daniel Kraut, the school’s chief executive officer. Kraut said that Weinberg was stepping back from his duties as principal and educational director immediately but will remain with the school until the end of the academic year.

Even before being cast in “Come From Away,” Nick Berke was excited by the musical. “I saw it when it was in previews on Broadway in, like, 2016 and immediately, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, this is one of the best things I’ve ever seen.’” So, when the opportunity arose for Berke to audition for the show that “had been living rent free in my brain,” he said, he leaped at the chance. “I was like, ‘I absolutely have to,’ I jumped at the opportunity,” he said.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania filed a federal lawsuit April 15 against the University of Pittsburgh on behalf of Students for Justice in Palestine. The lawsuit alleges the student group’s First Amendment rights were violated when it was suspended by the university in what the ACLU calls an “apparent retaliation for the club’s political speech.”The lawsuit follows a Feb.

Debbie Iszauk’s connection to Temple B’nai Israel goes back more than 65 years, when her parents joined the congregation in 1960. She’s readying for a final Shabbat at the Reform congregation, which has been a fixture in the White Oak/McKeesport communities since 1912. Iszauk said she couldn’t recall why her family became members of B’nai Israel. The area still had two additional congregations at the time of their joining — Tree of Life Sfard and Gemilas Chesed.
