Should have bought a Lotto ticket. That was Sheena James’s response to the day her husband Derek had last week. To start at the end, Derek, who is the golf director and pro at Southbroom Golf Club, won the prestigious South African PGA Professional of the Year award. This was presented at the SA PGA’s annual awards dinner, presented by The Courier Guy, and held at Serengeti Estates last week. That was the cherry on top.

South Coast Warriors sent five Colts teams to play in league club matches in Durban last Sunday. Overall, they had a pretty decent day, winning three and losing two. As always, there was some exciting rugby played but it was the wonderful camaraderie and excellent spirit so evident that was pleasing to see. This was especially the case in the U18s, where the team was represented by a number of former local schoolboys, now at various boarding schools in and around Durban.

Spartans will take on Solid XI in the final of the T20 Winter League at Port Shepstone Country Club this Sunday. This comes after Solid caused something of an upset with a win against in-form Bombay last Sunday. Solid batted first and looked to be in some early trouble but rallied to set a score of 135 all out in 20 overs. Mozammel Hoque top-scored with a steady 67 off 52, assisted by Zoab Ikram, who made 19 off 21 balls. Imran Razakazi was the pick of the Bombay bowlers with 5-21.

Who would ever have predicted that a Suzuki vehicle would become a popular run around in South Africa? It may have seemed far-fetched, but that’s what happening now with the gutsy little Suzuki Jimny. While it already has a reputation as being an adventurous outdoors type, what’s perhaps been overlooked is its usefulness as something of an urban vehicle, too.

My boy was in urgent need of a haircut recently. I was waiting for a call from the school, but they probably figured we’d get it sorted out soon enough. Anyway, it was off to the barber last Sunday. When we got there, we had to wait a bit, as two gents were getting haircuts. Actually, one looked like he was getting more than he had bargained for. He was lying back in the chair, two earbuds (or something similar) up his nostrils and the barber wielding his blade like a master swordsman.

On 8 October 2023, the day after Hamas’s assault on southern Israel, Lebanon’s fundamentalist terrorist organization, Hezbollah, began raining down rockets on Israeli military positions and settlements along the Lebanese border strip. The Israeli government—foolishly, I believe—ordered the immediate evacuation of the strip’s civilian population southward and—more wisely—mobilised and deployed three IDF divisions along the border to deter a Hamas-like invasion by Hezbollah.
