However, this spring has been a season of two drastically contrasting halves. Parents have handed their offspring a record £38.5 billion since 2021 - £16 billion more than in the previous four years - as first-time buyers struggle to afford expensive property and mortgages. The so-called Bank of Mum and Dad helped 173,500 first-time buyers climb on to the property ladder last year, giving them a combined total of £9.64 billion, according to analysis.
