There are seven tables across the decidedly intimate rooftop dining room of One MICHELIN Star Esquina Común, a cult favorite restaurant in the Condesa neighborhood of Mexico City, although that number can stretch to eight or nine if the night takes a turn. When a party unexpectedly expands on a recent evening, a waiter conjures a small two-seater out of storage. In the entryway, a vintage couch and coffee table have doubled as a low-top when friends dropped in unannounced.

Sparrows Lodge in Palm Springs, California, is the kind of homestyle retreat that keeps a box of memorabilia behind the check-in counter. The hotel, a handsome One MICHELIN Key property crowded with palms and fruit trees by the center of town, has a great story to tell. When Nicole Brydon Bloom walked down the aisle earlier this month in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, she would have seen her wedding guests seated along a powdery white sand dune, a wild cluster of coconut palm trees, and the glittering Caribbean Sea extending into the horizon. Her soon-to-be-husband, actor Justin Theroux (see his favorite New York City MICHELIN Guide picks here), waited for her at the end, dressed in a cream-colored Ralph Lauren jacket.
