At least 200 lightning strikes were recorded in the Rogue Valley and surrounding mountains Saturday afternoon and evening, causing 15 confirmed new fire starts, according to a news advisory Sunday morning from the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest and Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest District. Fire lookouts continue to relay new fire start information as they are found from these storms. Precipitation from the storms ranged from zero to a half inch in scattered areas.

The Holiday Fire, one of the two largest fires in the Smith River Complex that has closed Highway 199, crossed into Oregon Saturday morning, according to a news advisory from the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. Moderate to extreme fire behavior occurred overnight on the Smith River Complex, which now has burned more than 7,600 acres, the agency reported. The two fires threatening southwest Oregon are the Holiday and Kelly fires, which could merge soon, the Forest Service said.

The Flat Fire burning near the confluence of the Rogue and Illinois rivers in Curry County was estimated at 3,000 to 4,000 acres Sunday evening, one day after roaring to life at the Oak Flat Campground near Agness.
