Cortisol, one of the body’s main stress hormones, is primarily responsible for glucose metabolism and immune system regulation. The hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis regulates the levels of cortisol in the body (see Figure 1) [4]. Individuals with primary adrenal insufficiency (PAI) are unable to produce a sufficient quantity of cortisol, leading to symptoms such as weight loss, muscle weakness, and low blood pressure [1].

It asks whether the UK economy is caught in a ‘doom loop’ where performance is bad, but policy options are constrained by the fiscal position.
