Cortisol, one of the body’s main stress hormones, is primarily responsible for glucose metabolism and immune system regulation. The hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis regulates the levels of cortisol in the body (see Figure 1) [4]. Individuals with primary adrenal insufficiency (PAI) are unable to produce a sufficient quantity of cortisol, leading to symptoms such as weight loss, muscle weakness, and low blood pressure [1].

UK in a Changing Europe (UKICE) is a comparative newcomer among think tanks and it has produced a wide-ranging report on the state of the UK economy. It asks whether the UK economy is caught in a ‘doom loop’ where performance is bad, but policy options are constrained by the fiscal position. Unlike some SWOT analyses it looks as strengths as well as weaknesses, but these may favour the more prosperous parts of the UK.
