    The two major parties in the United States deserve to fade away. That the electoral system continues to prop up the Republicans and the Democrats in the face of such obvious dysfunction testifies to a broken political process. This month Donald J. Trump is being inaugurated as 47th President of the United States, returning to power after four years. Future historians may one day refer to those years as the Biden interregnum, a temporary blip in a longer Trump era.

    Although I am a native of the United States, it is possible that I was born a British subject through my late father. At the time Dad was born, his native island of Cyprus was a Crown colony of the United Kingdom. Cyprus had been ceded to Britain by the Ottoman sultan in 1878 as part of the settlement of the previous year’s Russo-Turkish war. Britain annexed the island outright in 1914 and all residents, including my grandparents, were henceforth British subjects.

Who could have foreseen that President Joe Biden would bow out midstream and yield to his vice president, Kamala Harris? Who would have anticipated that Trump would choose a very young and hot-headed Senator J. D. Vance (known earlier in his life as James Bowman and James Hamel) as his running mate?

    Since I was a child I have been fascinated by those extra books found in Catholic and Orthodox Bibles, known to Protestants as the Apocrypha. These include Tobit, Judith, the Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach, Baruch, the Letter of Jeremiah, 1 and 2 Maccabees and some additions to the books of Esther and Daniel as found in the Greek Septuagint.
