One of the buzziest musicals of 2025 will only be performed once. There will be no set, no costumes, and the only musical accompaniment will be a piano. Even so, some theater folks are talking about it as the event of the season. Firehouse Theatre has offered its “First Drafts and Bagels” series for years. It gives local playwrights the opportunity to stage a reading of their work, to help uncover rough spots that only emerge when what’s on the page gets spoken aloud in front of an audience.

The Richmond theater world suffered a seismic shock in 2024 when the largest local stage producer, Virginia Repertory Theatre, announced it might have to close without an emergency influx of cash. While the company weathered that particular storm, concerns still loom large both for Virginia Rep – where its relatively new multimillion dollar arts center is currently up for sale – and for the local theater scene in general.

At 84, Paul Williams keeps up a schedule that would exhaust someone half his age. Style called Williams in Nashville where, in his capacity as president and chairman of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), he was preparing to preside over the 62nd ASCAP Country Music Awards. When not leading ASCAP, he’s working with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro on a new musical based on the movie “Pan’s Labyrinth” or collaborating on new songs with the rock band “Portugal.

Thanks to the release of the movie “Wonka” last year, there are now three distinct cinematic takes on the character of Willy Wonka. For Virginia Rep’s upcoming stage production of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” most people involved seem to be looking to the original 1971 movie for inspiration. “I was thoroughly entertained by the Johnny Depp film,” says co-director Todd Norris.
