To get an idea of young people’s interest in literature today, try picking up a book on the average English student’s reading list. Forget Ulysses or War and Peace: hefty novels are out, according to Prof Sir Jonathan Bate, professor of English at Oxford University. To his mind, higher education institutions’ diversity drives have yielded students whose classroom experience more likely featured crowd control than directives to finish lengthy tomes, leading them to reach for shorter novels instead.

I was once a reluctant reader. It wasn’t that I hated books, it was that I loved watching television. My parents made the mistake of letting me have a tiny black-and-white portable television in my bedroom, and I spent many a happy afternoon up there on my own, watching the wrestling: Big Daddy versus Giant Haystacks. My mum and dad read to me when I was little. One of my favourite memories of my late father is of him reading Dr Seuss’s Green Eggs and Ham to me as I drifted off to sleep.

CommentA picture book only takes five or ten minutes to read to your childSOME of my fondest memories of my dad are of him reading Green Eggs And Ham by Dr Seuss to me as I lay on his chest when I was very young. When I was lucky enough to be a father, I thought it was lovely to carry on the tradition and read to my son too. As you can imagine, I would put on lots of voices when I read to my boy Alfred, who is now ten. I loved it, probably more than he did!Books are incredibly powerful.
