There’s a scene in the 1991 film The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell Of Fear where Lt. Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) finds himself in a shoot-out with a gang of thugs. The camera quickly cuts between Drebin and one thug as they alternate gunfire, each man popping out from behind cover to fire a shot before ducking back down as the return fire ricochets off nearby metal.

Upon release, the original System Shock suffered from comparison to DOOM. It wasn’t alone, of course. DOOM inspired countless clones that rarely matched its prodigious mastery of the nascent first-person shooter (FPS) genre. Indeed, so new was the FPS as a gameplay model that anything that presented a first-person view down the barrel of a gun into a real-time 3D world was measured against DOOM. Even the term FPS didn’t come until much later; we were stuck calling them ‘DOOM-clones’ for years.

At one point in Miasma Chronicles, one of the bad guys yells: ‘Let loose the frogs of war!’He’s a big bad mutant frog guy, you see, leading a rough-and-ready band of slightly smaller, slightly less bad mutant frog guys.
