Remember when hot hatches burst onto the scene in the 70s and 80s? We couldn’t get enough of them and most mainstream manufacturers produced one, or more. Famous examples were the Golf GTi, the Astra GTE, the Peugeot 205 GTI and Ford Focus RS. All good fun, all with rip-roaring acceleration, sharpened handling, firm suspension and, of course, a hatch.

Sometimes a ‘special’ car sticks in your mind - even when you’ve driven hundreds of also-rans. Such cars - for me - include a Lotus Turbo Esprit, a 1920s Blower Bentley, the original Sierra Cosworth, the first Toyota MR2, a Sherman tank, an articulated truck and a 35-footAmerican RV. All memorable in their own way. The Porsche Macan Turbo joined those ranks in 2018 when I drove the 3.6-litre V6 petrol version, producing 440 HP, over several hundred miles.

Just 5 minutes walk from the House of Lords where Labour peers ignored the pleas of blind people to once again be able to catch the bus.
