Haverhill’s Gianna Spero knows that Saturday will be bittersweet. When the Hillie star and a few hundred other athletes and coaches converge on Haverhill High’s Sapienza Memorial Track for the 46th annual Ottaviani Invitational — the unofficial kickoff to the spring track season — it will be without the event’s namesake, beloved coach and administrator John Ottaviani, who passed away in January.

BEDFORD — There was simply no surrender in the Windham High boys basketball team with its season on the line.
