Attacks on higher education are occurring almost daily. The Trump administration has frozen billions of dollars in federal research funding at elite universities, deported international students with little or no due process, questioned the tax-exempt status of Harvard and accused dozens of institutions of tolerating antisemitism, among other aggressive actions.

It has long been an article of faith among conservatives that the private sector, through competition and market discipline, delivers better, cheaper and more efficient products and services than government can. In the second Trump administration, this neoliberal economic and political philosophy is a lodestar. Project 2025, a blueprint crafted for the administration by the Heritage Foundation, recommends making Medicare’s private insurer-run plans the default option.

Alas, Trump and his Republican allies may not pay the full political price for their actions because the disastrous effect of many of their deeds will not be felt for some time. President Trump insists that the Department of Education has been infiltrated by “radicals, zealots, and Marxists” and has promised to abolish it and “return” responsibility for education to the states. Both the 2024 Republican Party platform and Project 2025, which labeled it a “one-stop shop for the woke education cartel,” also demand the department’s closure. Bills have been filed in both the House and Senate to transfer the department’s responsibilities to other government agencies.
