TRINITY COLLEGE STUDENTS’ union has apologised and said it wants to “learn from its mistakes” after a bizarre campaign to raise awareness of sexual violence met with a backlash from students. The campaign last week saw some members of the students’ union hang Guy Fawkes-type effigies labelled ‘rapist’ around campus. Students were invited to beat the effigies, student newspaper Trinity News has reported.

A town hall held by Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU) left many attendees with more questions than answers as union sabbatical officers downplayed their responsibility for a campaign which saw effigies hung and beaten around campus last week. While Education Officer Eoghan Gilroy chaired the discussion, it was President Jenny Maguire who fielded most questions which centred around the intentions and planning behind the campaign, and questions of culpability.

Beloved Trinity fox and unofficial campus mascot Sam has died, Trinity Sustainability has said. In a post on Instagram, the sustainability office shared that “the ethical decision” had been taken for Sam to put down, following weeks of treatment for a leg injury.
