Assembly members have been urged to commit to end rough sleeping in Northern Ireland by the end of the current Stormont mandate. The pledge is contained in a charter drawn up by the People’s Kitchen – a Belfast-based charity that supports homeless people. MLAs were encouraged to put their signatures to the charter at an event in Parliament Buildings on Monday.

Paul Givan told MLAs it was important to have “absolute clarity” in the education sector in relation to issues such as single-sex spaces and sporting participation. Mr Givan made clear that, regardless of the Supreme Court ruling, he was opposed to boys who identify as girls participating in girls’ sports or using girls’ changing or toilet facilities. The DUP minister made the comments in response to an Assembly question from party colleague and North Down MLA Peter Martin.

Mr Justice Scoffield said the challenge against Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins taken by loyalist activist Jamie Bryson would “cross the arguability threshold” to merit a judicial review hearing. Under Stormont rules, ministerial decisions that are deemed significant or controversial should be considered collectively by the powersharing coalition, rather than by an individual minister.
