1 Commentary Barrier islands are complex, dynamic landforms that often exist at the intersection of human and ecological communities. Modern barrier systems began forming after the Last Glacial Maximum (∼20 ka) and have transgressed across the continental shelf over 100 km in some instances (Belknap & Kraft, 1981) in response to increasing sea level.
