Following is a blog by Zoe Flood, an independent journalist and filmmaker. Zoe was in Nairobi on Sept. 21, 2013, when gunmen from Somalia's al Shabaab group attacked the upscale Westgate Mall. Sixty-seven people were killed during the raid and four-day siege by security forces. Zoe has written, filmed and produced for media including the BBC, the Guardian, the New York Times, Huffington Post, CNN, Channel 4, Sky News and National Geographic.

The horror of seeing a group of men being machine-gunned to death in Baghdad in 2007 came through despite the grainy black and white vision. The footage was publicly revealed by Julian Assange, WikiLeaks editor-in-chief, at the National Press Club in Washington on 5 April 2010. It become known as ‘Collateral Murder’.

Loud wailing suddenly breaks out at the back of the Reuters house in Baghdad, near a small room where the drivers relax and drink coffee. I stand up, heart pounding, senses primed. Something terrible has happened; the pitch of the anguish is not of this earth. A young Iraqi cameraman bursts through the door. I'll never forget the horror and pain on his face, his hands clutching his head. He speaks rapidly in Arabic. A senior Iraqi journalist sitting next to me has also got up.
