MOULTON — When Willow Dobbins arrived home last week from Children’s of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, the first thing she did was grab her bat, glove and T-ball stand. She wanted to prove to the world — and perhaps herself — that she could still play softball. “She’s told us that nothing will hold her down and that she would continue to play sports,” her father Travis Dobbins said.

If not for teammates, the world may have never known about Leo Gray’s athletic career. “Daddy was real competitive and perfected his skills no matter what he was doing,” daughter and Decatur City School Board President Michelle Gray King said. “But, he never said anything about being the greatest.”Gray, who played professional baseball in the Negro Leagues and semi-professional football for the Decatur Rough Riders, died Wednesday at his home following an extended illness. He was 88.

HATTON — On a white board in his balcony office above the gymnasium floor at Hatton High, Justin Henley had his schedule outlined for the last week of January. There were games on Monday and Tuesday, practices three other days and a game on Friday. “You don’t get to spend a lot of time with your family this time of year,” Henley said with a chuckle.

TUSCALOOSA — There will be plenty of chants of “Roll Tide” and “War Eagle” in Tuscaloosa on Saturday as Alabama and Auburn fans arrive for the annual Iron Bowl. Greg McKelvey has heard the chants for more than 50 years, and has even said a few himself. But when he arrives at Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium for the 89th meeting between Alabama and Auburn, his focus will not be on chants, and not necessarily on who wins the game.
