1 INTRODUCTION Balancing increases in food production with the need to safeguard the environment represents a major 21st century challenge, particularly in the tropics, where extremely rapid land use change is occurring (Miettinen et al., 2016; Taylor et al., 2009; Zhao et al., 2006). Indeed, land in SE Asia supports the food needs of large populations (ca 270 million people in Indonesia alone).
