Cambodia joined other Asian countries in seeking to convince President Trump to lift the tariffs through negotiations. Earlier this week, the U.S. imposed a 49% levy on Cambodia, which is among the Asian nations that have become a major manufacturing base for U.S. shoemakers. A number of them, including Nike, had moved production out of China to Southeast Asia in recent years.

In a statement, China’s commerce ministry said that the new U.S. tariffs are “typical unilateral bullying” that violate WTO rules. Beijing called on the U.S. to withdraw the levies. This week, the U.S. imposed an additional tariff of 34% on Chinese imports.
