1 INTRODUCTION In July 2022, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the global scientific authority on the conservation status of species, classified the North American monarch as Endangered (International Union for Conservation of Nature, 2022). North American monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is best known for its unique long-distance seasonal migration completed over multiple generations (Bittel, 2017; Figure 1). This migratory phenomenon is currently threatened.
