In the dying days of Joe Biden’s presidency, Jack Lew, the US ambassador to Israel, expressed concern about the changing views of his country’s politicians. ‘You can’t ignore the impact of this war on future policymakers,’ he said. ‘Not the people making the decisions today, but the people who are 25, 35, 45 today and who will be the leaders for the next 30 years, 40 years.’ Lew thinks this generational shift among Democrats is dangerous. I find myself hoping it’s real.

At least 28 Palestinian artists and writers have been killed since the beginning of Israel’s devastating bombardment of Gaza. It is a number that is easy to lose sight of given the wider horrifying reality of the war for Palestinians: more than 35,000 dead in total and two million displaced. Ten thousand bodies that have yet to be recovered from under the rubble – rubble that, according to the UN, will take 14 years to clear. But it is a number on which we should pause.

A conservative activist who teaches parents how to get books removed from school libraries has won her first major victory at a right-leaning Southern California school board, setting the district up for a fresh legal battle with the state. On Nov. 16, Chino Valley became the first school district in the country to enact what critics call “book banning” policy that allows any community member to challenge “sexually obscene” materials in school libraries.
