Let’s take a look at some facts — and myths — about Louisville’s allergens. In 2025, Derby City ranked No. 69 on the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America’s allergy capitals of the US. While that’s nothing to sneeze at, it’s a far cry from where Louisville placed a decade ago. In 2014, Louisville was the No. 1 worst place for allergies in the entire country.

If you’ve spent any time walking around LOU, there’s a good chance you’ve seen a large, metal sign — or two, or ten — commemorating a historical location, person, or event. These historical markers are built and maintained by the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS). Since 1949, the KHS has installed over 2,000 around the state, including 236 in Jefferson County. Kentuckians can even submit their own sites for consideration.

Some of Louisville’s neighborhoods, like Schnitzelburg, are defined by historical boundaries — like the path of its old trolley loop. Others, like downtown, are bounded by the law. Last week, the Louisville Metro Council approved a request by the Louisville Downtown Partnership to expand the Downtown Management District. This district was established in 1991 as the state’s first Business Improvement District, with the goal of enhancing economic + residential life.
