An unoccupied public house in an East Galway village will be demolished to make way for a small residential development after the owners took their case to An Bord Pleanála. Planning permission had been refused by Galway County Council to redevelop the building, in the heart of Caltra, which is said to be in an extremely poor state of repair. Padraig and Margaret Killilea want to build three residential units on the site of the old, licensed premises, shop and living accommodation.

A political triumvirate of a Government TD, an MEP and a local councillor embarked on a tour of a North Galway town on foot of locals’ pleas for investment and job creation. The day-long tour of Glenamaddy undertaken by Deputy Pete Roche, Maria Walsh MEP and Cllr Peter Keaveney also coincided with World Down Syndrome Day and the delegation met a number of those with the condition.

A 15th century Galway castle is set to be transformed into a habitable dwelling after planning permission was granted by Galway County Council. The owners successfully sought permission for change of use from castle structure to habitable dwelling – and the proposed internal works of the tower house including bedrooms, a new kitchen and bathroom on the first floor and associated site works. The location is Killeen Castle, Killeen, Castlegar and the applicant is Armando Barone.

Residents in Tuam will oppose a social housing development on an elevated site that they say will overlook their properties. Galway County Council plans to build over 200 new social houses in Tuam to help address the housing waiting list for the area which currently stands at 337. Nearly half of those seeking local authority housing in Tuam have requested one or two-bed accommodation while a further 144 have listed a three-bed home as their first preference.

The case of allegedly driving under the influence of cocaine against a former TD heard evidence from a member of the Medical Bureau of Road Safety regarding the procedure of testing the sample taken from the defendant. Court proceedings against former Labour TD Colm Keaveney, accused of drug driving, have been further adjourned pending legal submissions in relation to the charge against him.
