A grocery store in the heart of Athenry which has been closed for 20 years is now all set for a new lease of life. The former grocery will be transformed into an art and book shop – a move that has been widely welcomed in the town. Galway East TD Louis O’Hara was among those to welcome the granting of planning permission on the property, formerly known as Fahy’s Market and located at North Gate Street.

One of the busiest and best equipped playgrounds in the county has received funding of almost €19,000 which will go towards essential maintenance and the provision of additional equipment. The playground in Tuam, which is located in the Palace Grounds, is used by hundreds of children on a weekly basis. Local Councillor Karey McHugh said that essential maintenance at every playground was a costly exercise as the safety of the children was paramount.

A large-scale residential development has been approved for Athenry with permission granted for the construction of 133 badly needed dwellings in the town. Already it is understood that the developers, Athenry Ventures Limited, have already received a number of inquiries from potential purchasers who are finding it extremely difficult to access properties in the city.

A Galway councillor has warned intransigent opposition to windfarms given the need for wind energy in the county – but at the same time, Cllr Gerry Finnerty cautioned against the proliferation of windfarms in areas where residents have concerns. The Gort councillor was specifically referring the Derrybrien Wind Farm, which is located near the town and has been the subject of several objections over the years.

An unoccupied public house in an East Galway village will be demolished to make way for a small residential development after the owners took their case to An Bord Pleanála. Planning permission had been refused by Galway County Council to redevelop the building, in the heart of Caltra, which is said to be in an extremely poor state of repair. Padraig and Margaret Killilea want to build three residential units on the site of the old, licensed premises, shop and living accommodation.
