Being "Lynchian" involves surrealism, and pushing storytelling boundaries. January 15, 2025 saw the tragic passing of the incomparable David Lynch. Known to most as a director and filmmaker, Lynch was also a musical and visual artist, expressing his surrealist and experimental ideas in pretty much every creative medium he could.

Stardew Valley encourages players to live off the land, foraging and gathering materials available throughout the game's map. Each area — Cindersap Forest, the Beach, Calico Desert, and more — offers its own ways for players to get their hands on produce and building materials. One area within Stardew Valley — or rather, a sub-area — can be a little trickier to access than most of the others.

Despite that, though, Pelican Town's resident farmer can still speak to and eventually befriend this strange creature. It's not easy, as it requires learning a whole new language; furthermore, it doesn't net the same benefits as friendships with other villagers do. Still, it's a fun aspect to the game, and provides a touch of the fantastical to the player's story.

The proprietor of Pelican Town's Stardrop Saloon, Gus is one of the most lovable characters in all of Stardew Valley. Good-natured and jovial, Gus is a friend to all in town, including the player character. Of course, players still have to put in the effort before Gus becomes a close confidante. As with all the villagers in town, Gus has his own likes and dislikes, his own goals and worries.

The somewhat shy blacksmith of Stardew Valley's Pelican Town, Clint keeps to himself in his shop and works wonders with metal in his forge. Though he comes off as gruff at first, players can get him to open up with a few gifts and some friendly conversation, helping him come out of his shell. Winning Clint's friendship is worth the player's time, especially early on in the game.

Different fish are active at different times, locations, and seasons. Upgrading fishing rods can make fishing easier and more efficient. Look out for fish frenzies, use special bait, and choose the right tackle for advantages. Fishing is one of the trickier mechanics in Stardew Valley, often taking new players a great deal of time and practice to master.

Silos are an essential building to have on any Stardew Valley farm. These tall, 3x3 structures are used to store hay, which is a vital material for any farmer who chooses to raise animals. Without a silo, players may struggle to keep their cows and chickens fed and happy, especially in the wintertime. Some players may not realize the importance of this building until they have already begun to raise animals, resulting in a scramble to get one built quickly.

When the original Star Trek first hit screens back in 1966, the concept was pitched to audiences as "a wagon train to the stars." The Enterprise and its crew were soaring off into an unknown, unexplored universe, not unlike the explorers of the old Wild West. There were no rules out here in the vast expanse of space, and even Starfleet protocol was still in its infancy. Kirk, Spock, and the rest often had to improvise to get out of dangerous situations with their lives.

For me, it was the first Pillars of Eternity game. I loved the characters and the worldbuilding, but I just could not get a handle on the real-time combat gameplay. I ended up having someone help me through the battles, because the most frustrating part was that, despite the difficulties, I so badly wanted to see the story through to the end!
