JUBA, South Sudan (AP) — Divisions emerged Wednesday in South Sudan's main opposition party after the detention of its longtime leader, as some voted to replace him with a government minister accused of conspiring with the country's president. Riek Machar, whose political tensions with President Salva Kiir recently threatened to tip South Sudan back into civil war, remained in house arrest as Sudan People's Liberation Movement-In-Opposition party leaders loyal to him skipped the meeting.

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) — South Sudanese officials said Tuesday that they will allow a foreign national entry into the country after their initial refusal to do so prompted the United States to revoke the visas of all its citizens. Congolese national Makula Kintu will be accepted into the country “in the spirit of maintaining friendly relations” between South Sudan and the U.S., said foreign affairs ministry spokesperson Apuk Ayuel Mayen.

Some Sudan People Liberation Movement-In-Opposition leaders loyal to Rick Machar, who remains under house arrest, skipped the meeting in which the country's minister of peacebuilding, Stephen Kuol Par, was named interim chair. Some Machar loyalists have fled the country.
