PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) - Chatatip "Nok" Suntaranon is the award-winning owner of the Fishtown restaurant Kalaya. The restaurant pays tribute to her mother and brings the recipes from her hometown of Trang in South Thailand to Philadelphia. "The restaurant - I named after my mother to be the place that people will know about Thai food, about our culture, and that's the goal," Suntaranon said. Her passion for food earned her the 2023 James Beard Award for Best Mid-Atlantic Chef.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) - Bishop Efren Esmilla followed a path from his homeland in the Philippines to his divine destiny in Philadelphia. In March 2024, he started serving as one of the newest auxiliary bishops and the first bishop of Filipino descent in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. "It's not only the Filipinos that have been so happy about that, but even the other communities," Esmilla said. Esmilla's path to Philadelphia started in Nagcarlan, in Laguna province.

She started the center in 1993 due to a lack of bilingual education programs. "The main reasons that I opened my school was to build self-esteem and confidence in children, no matter where they came from, what language they speak or what culture they are," said Wong.
