Coal plants in Bosnia & Herzegovina were the biggest SO2 emitters in the Western Balkans in 2024, according to a survey by CEE Bankwatch, an environmental NGO. Last year, Bosnian plants emitted 212,840 tonnes of SO2 – 11.3 times higher than the allowed limits. Bulgaria’s Constitutional Court said on June 10 it has rejected a request by President Rumen Radev to annul the parliament’s decision declining his request for referendum on euro adoption. Sofia recently got the green light from the European Central Bank and the European Commission to join the eurozone as of January 1, 2026. The final decision is to be taken by the Council of the EU in July.

The police in Bosnia & Herzegovina’s Republika Srpska arrested Milan Milicevic, the leader of the opposition Serbian Democratic Party (SDS), on June 9. The SDS is one of three parties expected to replace Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik’s SNSD in Bosnia’s state-level ruling coalition. It was seen as an attack by Dodik on his rivals, as the SNSD controls all institutions in the entity. The arrest was confirmed by Republika Srpska’s prosecutor’s office in a statement.

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Rossen Zhelyazkov said on June 6 he has ordered to three ministers to probe data released by the Anti-Corruption Fund (ACF) NGO regarding a massive secret energy cartel. Earlier in June, ACF published an investigation into the alleged cartel comprising over 150 companies owned by controversial businessman Hristo Kovachki, who for years had denied controlling any of them.
