May 31-Jacksonville senior Ryan McCombs took third in the shot put, and freshman Darren Henry finished in the top 11 in three events at the Illinois High School Association Class 2A State Final Meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston on Saturday. McCombs recorded a distance of 55 feet, 1 inch in the shot put, bettering his throw from last year's state meet by almost 5 full feet. McCombs finished 10th in the shot put in 2024 with a throw of 50 feet, 4.5 inches.

University of Tennessee recruit Cameron Appenzeller was a little bit more than the Jacksonville baseball team could handle on Saturday as Chatham Glenwood beat the Crimsons 4-0 in the championship game of the Jacksonville Regional at Future Champions Sports Complex. Appenzeller gave up two hits, struck out 14 and walked one as Little Leaguers from a tournament at the fields, and at least one rumored major league scout, looked on.

May 29-You might knock down the West Central baseball team. But you can't keep them down. Cam Sievers and Landyn Woods combined for a five-hitter, and West Central scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Glasford Illini Bluffs 2-1 in the semifinals of the Illinois College Sectional on Wednesday. West Central will take on Western Illinois Valley Conference rival Routt for the sectional championship on Saturday. First pitch is at 11 a.m.Sievers walked five batters early.

Future Champions Sports Complex and the Illinois Theater will present special showings of the award-winning short film “Safe at Home,” a documentary that honors the life and legacy of Brad Wallin, a young athlete who succumbed to osteosarcoma, a rare form of childhood bone cancer, in 2004. The screenings will take place during the 21st year of the Brad Wallin Memorial Tournament, hosted for the first time at Future Champions over the next two weekends: May 30 to June 1 and June 6-8.
