Due to circumstances beyond their control, the Corrib Mask Search and Rescue (CMSAR) have had to remove the rescue boat from the water at Lisloughrey, Lough Corrib. CMSAR wish to reassure all lake users that while the response time on the Corrib will be a little slower than before, it continues to provide a 24/7 (365) rescue service. It is also a time to remind all water users to have a means of communication to hand and always wear a properly fitted life jacket.

A Donegal school has won first prize in Inland Fisheries Ireland’s (IFI) national ‘Something Fishy’ competition. Students at Gartan National School created the winning project and won €500 voucher to be used for educational purposes. After completing the programme, students created projects that illustrated the theme of ‘fish on the move’, and submitted these projects to the Something Fishy competition.

Applications opened last Thursday for angling skippers to catch-and-release Atlantic bluefin tuna as part of a collaborative scientific survey. The initiative is geared to collect details on their size, where and when they occur in Irish waters, and information gleaned from their recapture in foreign fields. The programme saw recaptures for the first time in 2023. Changes in the size of the fish encountered were noted, thus providing positive data on their iconic and tightly managed species.

Two recaptures of tagged Atlantic bluefin tuna are worth highlighting. The first bluefin was tagged and released originally by skipper Adrian Molloy on October 2nd, 2020 in Donegal Bay. Three years later, the same fish was caught on September 11th, 2023 off the northeast coast of Spain. The second bluefin was originally tagged and released by skipper Tony Santry on August 23rd, 2023 off the Kerry coast – and recaptured 22 days later on September 14th, 2023 off the west French coast.
