AN exciting plan to transform the Banagher Marina space and renovate the long vacant Royal Shannon Hotel, could take up to five years to bring to fruition, the Tribune has learned. The County Council has said that it could take as long as five years from today's date before locals and visitors will be able to enjoy what will be a beautifully upgraded space.

CLLR Michael O'Meara strongly criticised Irish Water/Uisce Éireann for what he called “years of neglect” during the May meeting of Nenagh MD. “We had four water sources for our public system covering much of Lower Ormond. Now there's only one. We are like an aeroplane flying with only one engine. As a result almost half of the Municipal District could be left without water at any given moment. “Irish Water let three water sources go. We should write to them about this matter.

CATHAOIRLEACH Fiona Bonfield told the May Nenagh MD meeting that the Deposit Return Scheme is “a fantastic scheme. It has worked very well, greatly reducing our rubbish, greatly reducing the number of bottles and cans strewn around the place.”A member of the Council Executive agreed, pointing out that the number of bottles and cans has noticeably gone down. “We are seeing far less of them dumped on our streets, roads and footpaths,” he remarked.

On Friday morning I went for a dip in the Birr Pool at seven. Engaging in the usual small talk I asked a fellow regular swimmer how he was. “It's Friday,” he said. “A good day - the weekend on the way.”The weekend came and went and on Monday I once again drove to the Leisure Centre for an early morning swim. On this occasion, when I enquired after the health of the same swimmer, his emotional vibe music was downbeat, in contrast to Friday - “Back to reality,” came the gloomy response.
