Authorities have arrested a person in connection to the theft of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem’s purse, law enforcement officials familiar with the matter said Sunday. The suspect was arrested at a motel on Georgia Avenue in Northwest Washington and faces charges in two other robberies in the District in blocks south of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, according to police.

Following President Donald Trump’s Feb. 19 executive order targeting nonexecutive branch foreign aid and peacemaking agencies for elimination, agents of DOGE, the White House-based organization overseen by Elon Musk, have moved to take over entities both small and large. DOGE, which stands for Department of Government Efficiency, on Monday took over the U.S. Institute of Peace after threatening its officials with criminal prosecution.

The United States is days away from a government shutdown if Congress cannot pass legislation to extend federal funding. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has proposed a novel and uncertain path to keep the government operating so legions of federal employees aren’t left without pay just before the Thanksgiving holiday. Congress narrowly dodged a government shutdown in September, but Mr. Johnson, who has been speaker for less than a month, is running into the same problems his predecessor faced.
