Naomi Judd was a musician who left country music better than she found it, a caring nurse, a proud mother and a wife who adored her partner of 42 years. She died by suicide on April 20, 2022, the day before she was to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. Naomi was living with depression, a disease that many Americans experience. In 2023, more than 49,000 Americans died by suicide, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There is a crisis on college campuses across America. Over the past decade, the share of college students experiencing depression has nearly doubled from 21% in 2014 to more than 40% in 2023, according to the Healthy Minds Network, a research organization that studies teen and young adult mental health at colleges and universities across the country. The rate of anxiety among college students is nearly as high, and 15% say they have seriously considered suicide.

I was 14 when I tried my first vape. It was “blueberry ice” flavored, and the head rush nearly knocked 9th grade me off my feet. The more hits I took, the more I wanted – and the more influence the cool-looking device that fit neatly into my hand had over my life. By 10th grade, vaping on an electronic cigarette became a daily – if not hourly – ritual. My friends and I hid our vapes in our socks and bras, sneaking puffs in school bathrooms and during lunch breaks.

Our country is grappling with acute mental health challenges – a loneliness epidemic, a youth mental health crisis, and stressed and overwhelmed families. In fact, 9 in 10 adults believe the U.S. is currently experiencing a mental health crisis, according to a 2022 national survey. Many of us are losing friends and family members.

In many research projects I lead, we test, iterate, and optimize calls to action (CTAs) to find one that works with the organization’s messaging. In other words, what calls to action inspire the increased knowledge, shifted attitudes, or instilled behaviors the organization is working toward? In advising movements, brands, and causes on social issue campaigns, I have discovered a trend in CTAs worthy of a larger discussion.

Donor. Volunteer. Activist. Supporter. Organizer. Constituent. Conscious consumer. Given that you’re reading these words in a publication designed to help organizations like yours engage people, you’ve likely heard and probably used some or all of these words. The question is, do these generalized, transactional labels help persuade people to join your efforts? I don’t believe they do. Most organizations try to categorize individuals by their type of engagement.
