Defending state champion Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett ended the softball season for Morristown East by pounding the Lady Hurricanes 13-3 in the first round of the Region One 4-A Tournament at King Park. The Lady Indians, now 22-16 for the season, blasted four home runs among their 15 hits in rolling into the finals where they will play at Science Hill tomorrow for the title. Both teams have locked up sectional berths.

It wasn’t your usual kind of shutout but Morristown West blanked cross-town rival East, 2-0, Thursday afternoon at J. C. Wild Park to force a winner-take-all game on Friday in the District Two 4-A Softball Tournament. Briony Bunsic, pitching for the fourth straight day, racked up her sixth career shutout of the Lady Hurricanes but it wasn’t in the usual dominant fashion where she allows only a few baserunners and records double figure strike outs.

Morristown West kept its quest for a fourth straight District Two 4-A Softball Tournament title alive by riding the pitching of Briony Bunsic to a 2-0 victory over Jefferson County Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Trojans were to play Morristown West at 5:30 on Thursday and would have to beat the Lady Hurricanes again on Friday for the title. However, Coach Chad Parker’s team clinched a spot in next week’s Region One Tournament with the victory.

Morristown East passed its opening round test in the District 2-4A Softball Tournament with a 5-3 victory over Jefferson County Monday afternoon at King Park. The Lady Hurricanes scored once in the first and got a home run from senior Lilabeth Jordan in the second to grab a 2-0 lead before the Lady Patriots’ Mercedes Randolph smacked a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to tie the game.

Morristown West closed another perfect District Two 4-A softball season Thursday afternoon at King Park by spoiling East’s Senior Night with an 8-5 victory in the regular-season finale for both teams.
