For a positive integer n, the full transformation semigroup Tn consists of all self maps of the set {1, …, n} under composition. Any finite semigroup S embeds in some Tn, and the least such n is called the (minimum transformation) degree of S and denoted µ(S). We find degrees for various classes of finite semigroups, including rectangular bands, rectangular groups and null semigroups. The formulae we give involve natural parameters associated to integer compositions.

Politicians are often seen planting trees for a photo-op, and marketing brochures are regularly filled with visions of a near future where occupants reside in manmade verdant oases within the confines of the city. This aesthetic does not appeal to Des Fitzgerald, author of The City of Today is a Dying Thing. He takes the unusual stance of being “against green cities”, which might make him sound anti-tree or anti-nature but it’s not quite that simple.

I hate Paris. It’s something about the mix of imperial pomp and saccharine cutesiness in the streetscape. It’s also the terrible food, I think. And though quite a few European cities confuse rudeness with personality, in Paris there is just something about the sheer frequency of interpersonal unpleasantness that, over time, becomes wounding to the human spirit. Mostly my hatred of Paris is a reaction to a very dull and conventional city’s vastly inflated reputation.

On a recent annual birding trip to Monhegan Island, a friend of mine was fortunate early in the day to see a stunning male scarlet tanager (Piranga olivacea), an infrequent Neotropical migrant to Maine. My friend spent the rest of the day exploring the island and recording sightings of migratory and resident birds. As he walked toward the ferry to go home, a large tabby cat stepped into his path, carrying in its mouth a male scarlet tanager.
