    With prom season fast approaching, juniors and seniors at Garinger High School got to shop for prom attire last week — free of charge — without ever leaving their east Charlotte campus. For the third year, the school hosted its “Cinderella’s Closet,” a week-long event that offered more than 200 donated dresses, as well as jewelry and shoes. Male students were invited to shop for suits and ties.

    Crime was down in the first three months of this year, according to data released Thursday by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The data covered the three-month period from Jan. 1 through March 31, and it was compared to the same first-quarter data in 2024. Some of the biggest decreases were in violent crime, including homicides and aggravated assaults. Car theft — a considerable challenge for CMPD in recent years, also declined.

    LaToya Evans founded the LEPR Agency in 2017 and grew it to be one of the nation’s largest Black-owned public relations firms. On Friday, Evans will be inducted into the North Carolina Media and Journalism Hall of Fame, along with five others. Evans, who lives and works in Charlotte, said her selection to the hall of fame, which is based at UNC-Chapel Hill, was “a lifetime goal.”“I can’t believe it’s happening,” she said in a statement.
