    The Pioneering Spirit project, a partnership between the Trust and The Glenlivet, began in 2020 and is the first project of its kind. This nationwide archaeology and research programme is working to uncover the hidden history of whisky-making in the Scottish landscape, from its illicit beginnings to the rise of industrial distilleries. It’s seeking to unearth both old and new stories, as well as ground the knowledge and the mythology of illicit whisky-making back to the very places it happened.

    In spring 2024, we launched a new portal that gives unprecedented access to more than 2,500 historic items in our Robert Burns collection, including manuscripts, archives and artefacts that are held in store for their long-term preservation and protection. The Trust cares for the largest collection of Burns artefacts in the world, as well as the cottage he was born in, where the first Burns Supper was held, five years after his death.

    The Trust recorded at least 12–14 calling males on Canna this year, which is the first time we have conducted formalised corncrake monitoring on the island for many years. Data collected by Bob Swann from the Highland Ringing Group over the last few decades demonstrated a worrying trend of just 1 or 2 corncrakes on Canna in many seasons, so these new figures are a very welcome increase.
