For the last few months, my son has been dying to ride in a Waymo. I mean, granted, he’s 13, and he’s been dying to do a lot of things, such as buy a $1,000 Chrome Hearts hoodie or be invited to Braden’s party even though Braden seems like the type who will finish high school in rehab. But part of being a parent is sometimes saying, You know what? That’s stupid and tacky and it sounds terrible. But yes, we can do it.

It gives me no pleasure to admit that I undertake a significant proportion of my travel out of sheer spite. I mean, not 100 percent — I’m not an animal. I am theoretically capable of experiencing joy, wanderlust, and many other positive human emotions. I’m talking about the other part of me. The part that hears parents at my kids’ school talking about going on some fancy ski vacation and immediately feels a sense of resentment.

I don’t think I’ve ever really stopped eating. I’m not saying that I struggle with my weight, because I don’t really. If I had to describe my physical composition at the moment, I’d say, “overcooked piece of penne rigate,” but as far as size goes I’m O.K. with where I am. I’m saying I am never not eating. I come from a long line of noshers. My father, my grandfather, his grandfather before him in Poland. We like to snack.
