The first round of the NHL Draft certainly gets the most coverage, but there is still talent to be found on day two of draft festivities. Naturally, the best chance to find talent on day two is in the second round. The Detroit Red Wings’ success picking in the second round is propably up for interpretation. Their most successful second round pick in recent memory was Filip Hronek, who was selected with the 53rd pick of the 2016 draft.

Over the course of the Detroit Red Wings’ teardown and rebuild, they have parted ways with a number of players whose names and faces are still etched in the minds of fans to this day. While it’s never fun to say goodbye – especially when the players heading out the door have been within the organization since they were drafted – those moves are necessary to pave the way for the future.

It has been nearly a decade since the Detroit Red Wings accepted that they were at the end of their competitive window and began the long, arduous process of rebuilding. Since 2016, the Red Wings have held a top five pick in the draft once (2020), but have picked within the top-10 six times (2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023).

The Detroit Red Wings may have fallen in the draft lottery, going from the 12th to the 13th pick in the first round, but they should still have plenty of quality options available to them when they are on the clock. If things fall their way, they may even have an option or two they weren’t expecting to have in that range. The NHL Draft – and any draft for that matter – is all about seizing opportunities to add surplus value whenever those opportunities present themselves.

It is no secret that the Detroit Red Wings have been too easy to play against in recent years. Never has that fact been more clear than when head coach Todd McLellan called his team out in his year-end press availability, noting the team’s lack of mental toughness. “It doesn’t take much for us to start taking on water, and when that happens, it takes a long time for us to get out of it,” McLellan said.
