Stratigraphy as a story of life on earth The successive series of stratified formations are piled on one another, almost like courses of masonry. The Danish anatomist Niels Stensen (“Steno”) was one of the first known people to propose the mechanism for fossilization, explaining how fossils end up buried within layers of rock. Through observations of the rock layers in Italian cliffs, Steno hypothesized that rocks had originally been liquid, which flowed and then hardened to create the layers.

Can new species evolve without older species going extinct? To answer that question, let’s look at one of our now-extinct relatives, Homo naledi. More than 1,500 H. naledi fossils were unearthed from a South African cave. H. naledi’s small brain suggested that it was an old species in our family tree that had evolved long before us.
