A traffic crash on Sunday afternoon has shut down one of the two roadways into the Florida Keys, deputies said. Around 2 p.m., the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office announced Card Sound Road, which leads into north Key Largo, was closed in both directions because of a crash that occurred on the Miami-Dade County side of the highway. Authorities have not released details on the crash, and it is unclear when the closure will be lifted.

A tropical depression in the Caribbean Sea has been upgraded to Potential Tropical Cyclone 19 Wednesday afternoon, and forecasters say it will affect Central America as a tropical storm. The potential tropical cyclone is expected to become a tropical storm within the next day or so, the National Hurricane Center said. Hurricane Rafael, a strong category 2 storm, has moved through Cuba on Wednesday night and is now heading toward the southeastern Gulf of Mexico . As of the 8 p.m. update, Rafael was about 60 miles west of Havana and 130 miles southwest of Key West. A few hours earlier, Mariel, Cuba reported sustained winds of 80 mph with a peak gust of 115 mph as the eye passed nearby. The island nation has recently been struggling with prolonged power outages.
