Last year, a study by Public First revealed that public sector savings of £38 billion annually could be achieved by 2030 using generative AI. In financial services, there currently seems to be a split between banks that are aggressively deploying AI while addressing concerns about generative AI by limiting its use for internal applications, and those that have not even formalised its use for coding. And this dichotomy seems rife across all industries.

I’ve started this year talking about the pace of innovation increasing and thus the need to re-invent banking and financial services with the new technology available. Futurist Brian Wang recently declared in a blog post that we are “on the event horizon of the singularity”, and that “we will get 40-60 years of progress in about six years.” His analysis offers compelling calculations supporting this projection.

My key point was that the pace of innovation in all areas of technology is increasing so much that we can no longer think of incremental improvements/changes, but instead we have to think of exponential change.

Last week, my good friend and podcast co-host, Dave Wallace, predicted that we may see artificial general intelligence (AGI) by the end of the year. I personally think that might be over-optimistic as even Ray Kurzweil forecasted AGI by 2029 back in 2005. Ray has a canny knack for predictions, with 86% of his 147 (listed on Wikipedia) coming true. However, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei now says it could be as soon as 2026, so maybe Dave is not over-optimistic at all.

As we move through the first few weeks of 2025, now is the time when we love to predict what’s coming for the new year and beyond. The launch and rapid adoption of ChatGPT in late 2022 took many by surprise. Subsequently, the speedy evolution of generative AI to encompass the generation of images, video, music and more in less than a year also took many people by surprise. Already now we have moved beyond that onto agentic AI where AI can independently make decisions and take actions on our behalf.
