An Afghan midwife describes how a woman died in childbirth, along with her baby. She was snowed into her village and couldn't reach a hospital. Just weeks before, the health clinic in her village had closed. If it was open, a midwife could have helped her. Other midwives, based in hospitals, tell NPR that their facilities are seeing women rushed in from remote areas where clinics have closed too late: The mothers and babies often die, say the midwives.

SRIPERUMBUDUR, India — The women knocking on doors of the employment agencies that dot the roads of this industrial town are one sign of how India has profited from U.S. tensions with China. Here in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, many seek work at one company: FoxConn, which manufactures iPhones for Apple. Women make up some 70% of the Sriperumbudur plant's workforce.

AILSA CHANG, HOST:In March, the World Health Organization said that more than 200 health care facilities had shut down or suspended operations in Afghanistan, all as a result of the Trump administration's freeze on aid funding. It said without urgent intervention, about 200 more facilities would shut down by June. On the ground, Afghan midwives tell NPR that they are already seeing the impact.
